Overview: Not everyone works directly with youth, but in a public library, everyone encounters them. Whether it’s a caregiver seeking a book recommendation, teens being “teens,” or a child exploring the library, staff play a crucial role in creating positive experiences. This webinar is designed for library staff who don’t regularly work with youth, but want to feel more confident stepping in when youth services staff aren’t available. You’ll learn practical tips for engaging with kids, teens, and families - like how to engage with teens, assist young children, and help caregivers locate materials that meet their needs. We’ll also explore youth brain development, what to expect at different stages, and how to quickly assess if a book matches a child’s reading level. By the end of the session, you’ll have tools to navigate youth interactions with empathy, patience, and effectiveness - no matter your role.
