Job Description
General Statement of Duties: Responsible for all children's/young adult department operations including planning, scheduling programs, coordinating and implementing programs and policies, assisting in maintaining collection and promoting the Library in the community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Supports the library staff in the Children's Room.
Provides reader's advisory for patrons, mainly in Children's and Young Adult literature.
Creates, conducts, and provides publicity for programs for young adults in grades 6-12.
Works with the members of the Teen Board and teen volunteers.
Supervises the implementation of children's programs by other staff members.
Provides outreach to children by conducting weekly story reading and booktalks at local schools in grades PreK- 8 during the school year.
Assists with materials selection for teachers; prepares collections for teacher loans.
Compiles monthly program attendance and service statistics, and reports them to the director
Provides collection development for Young Adult and Children's print material and ebooks, which includes ordering of new materials and weeding of the collection.
Provides collection development and cataloging for juvenile videogames, board games, audiobooks, and DVDs.
Supervises collection development and cataloging of Audio Visual materials by other staff members.
Performs desk duty operations including reference assistance, catalog instruction, instruction in use of reference materials, and library classification system.
Checks in and checks out materials to patrons using automated system; places reserves on materials for patrons; submits interlibrary loan requests for patrons.
Assists patrons with computer usage: juvenile game computers and internet terminal (including web searches, use of links from GPL home page, printing, and other basic internet functions).
Collects and records receipt of money from patrons for fines and fees.
Opens or Closes library on scheduled days, including security check of conference rooms, locking of doors, shut-down of computers and other electronics, and counting and securing of fine drawer monies.
Empties book drop; shelves materials as needed; reads shelves as needed;
Creates book displays.
Informs patrons by phone and/or mail of reserved items; returns unclaimed reserves to shelves.
May serve in any area of the library system at the request of the director.
Assists patrons in the Ohio Room with the use of microfilm readers, genealogy websites, and assistance in utilizing reference materials.
Attends conferences and workshops relevant to designated work.
Serves as in-charge person for the building as scheduled.
Performs other duties as required.
Supervision Received: Works under the general direction of the Library Director.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Thorough knowledge of public library principles, methods, materials, and practices, and ability to interpret such to the general public.
• Possesses a solid general education and is especially familiar with children and young adult literature and resources
• Committed to excellence in customer service
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Ability to understand and interpret library policies, procedures, and rules
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to organize work for efficient use of time
• Ability to interact courteously and effectively with library staff and volunteers, the library’s business contacts, and the general public
• Ability to initiate, organize, and follow through on programs, services, and projects
• Solid knowledge of current trends and developments in the library profession and in children and young adult library services
• Thorough knowledge of children and young adult library resources: print, non-print, and electronic
• Experience in collection development and programming for children and young adult
• Ability to represent the Library at professional and community meetings
• Valid Ohio Drivers’ License
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited four year college or university is required; a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association-accredited institution is preferred. Previous library experience with supervisory experience is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to perform duties in an office environment
• Ability to work in an environment subject to continuous interruptions and background noises
• Ability to work under stress from deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions
• Ability to operate computers with proficiency using library software, word processing, and the internet
• Ability to view a computer monitor and/or operate a keyboard for extended periods of time
• Ability to move and/or lift materials up to 25 pounds
• Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, reach, climb, balance, and sit
• Regularly required to talk and/or hear; use hands to operate objects, tools, and controls; and reach with hands and arms
• Vision and hearing at, or correctable to, “normal ranges”
• Ability to communicate effectively with individuals in person, over the telephone, and via the printed word
• Ability to file books, periodicals, files, reports, notebooks, etc. on shelves ranging from 0.5 to 7 feet from the floor
