Ohio Voters Show Strong Support for Public Libraries, Approving 12 of 14 Levies

Voters across Ohio delivered a clear endorsement of their public libraries in yesterday’s primary election, approving 12 of the 14 library levies on the ballot.

The measures included seven requests for new or additional funding, six renewals, and one renewal with an increase. Notably, all renewal or renewal-with-increase levies were approved, each receiving at least 64% of the vote, underscoring broad and consistent support for maintaining library funding.

Levies seeking new or additional funding also performed well, with 71% earning voter approval. Only two levies did not pass.

Overall, the results demonstrate that Ohioans recognize the enduring value of their public libraries and the essential role they play in education, workforce readiness, and community connection.

“These results send a powerful message,” said Michelle Francis, Executive Director of the Ohio Library Council. “At a time when there is active discussion about eliminating property taxes in Ohio, voters made it clear they are willing to invest in services that matter. Ohioans trust their libraries to be good stewards of their tax dollars and are willing to support them at the polls.”

The outcome underscores the deep connection between Ohio communities and their libraries, which continue to serve as essential hubs for literacy, lifelong learning, digital access, and economic opportunity.

“Ohioans believe libraries are vital community anchors,” Francis said. “From early childhood literacy to job search assistance and access to technology, libraries provide resources people rely on every day.”
